Getting Ready for University

title

Preparing for college can feel overwhelming, but the good news is, you don’t have to do everything all at once. Whether you’re in grade 11 or grade 12, there are clear steps you can take to stay on track and make the transition to university smoother. Here’s a guide designed for international school students like you.

Grade 11: Laying the Foundation

This year is all about exploration and preparation.

All Year

  • Explore careers: research possible career paths to narrow down career interests. Speak to your college counsellor to see if they can arrange for a work placement or to meet with someone in that field.

  • Visit universities: Whether in person or virtually, get a feel for different schools.

  • Consider earning college credit: Look into AP courses, or early college programs like the Andrews University Dual Credit courses.

Fall

  • Attend college fairs to learn about your options.

  • Take the PSAT/NMSQT to practice for the SAT if you’re interested in U.S. universities.

Spring

  • Think about registering for the SAT or ACT.

  • Research scholarships as many are open to international students.

Summer Before Grade 12

  • Research possible majors.

  • Apply for external scholarships.

  • Explore early college programs that let you experience university life before enrolling.

Grade 12: Making It Happen

This year is when you put your plans into action.

All Year

  • Continue career exploration and visiting schools.

  • Stay focused and remember that second semester grades matter!

  • Keep considering opportunities for college credit.

Fall

  • Attend college fairs and finalize your college list.

  • Register for the SAT/ACT if needed.

  • Apply to colleges and request your transcripts and test scores.

  • Apply for scholarships early and often.

Spring

  • Audition for music scholarships or try out for athletics if those interest you.

  • Contact your academic advisor (starting April) to register for classes.

Summer Before College

  • Work a summer job or internship to save money and gain experience.

  • Request your final transcript to be sent to your university.

Making College Affordable

  • Apply for institutional scholarships (offered by the university) and external scholarships.

  • Look into on-campus jobs once you begin college.

  • Take AP or Andrews Dual Credit courses to earn credits before you even set foot on campus.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for college is a journey, and every step you take in high school helps set the stage for success. Use your grade 11 year to explore and your grade 12 year to act. Stay curious, stay focused, and keep asking questions. Your future is full of possibilities.
