In this second blog post in the Coastal Ecology Exploration Course series, Griggs China Academic Director Lisa Kerr shares highlights from a recent trip to Lingshui Lagoon, another key learning environment for this exciting programme. This area will serve as another extension of the classroom, where students will engage in hands-on wetlands conservation, scientific research, and environmental stewardship.

On the afternoon of July 17, teachers and leaders from Jingying International Academy and Academic Director from Griggs China visited the remarkable Lingshui Lagoon and local tidal zones, where they worked alongside environmental experts to further develop JIA's Coastal Ecology Curriculum. This field investigation highlighted the incredible opportunities the local environment provides for authentic scientific inquiry, project-based learning, and environmental stewardship.

One of the most exciting aspects of collaborating with Jingying International Academy has been helping develop a truly authentic learning experience that makes the most of our unique location. In the afternoon of July 17, I joined the teaching team for a field investigation at Lingshui Lagoon, guided by Mr. Lu Gang, Director of the Haikou Datan Wetland Research Institute to finalize the new Coastal Ecology Curriculum.

What makes this program special is that it is far more than outdoor education. From primary school through to high school, students will engage in progressively challenging experiences—from discovering the natural world through exploration, to conducting scientific fieldwork, and ultimately undertaking research-based projects focused on ecological restoration, environmental monitoring, and sustainability. Situated beside one of China's most remarkable coastal ecosystems, our students will have access to an extraordinary living classroom where they can develop scientific thinking, environmental responsibility, and global awareness through authentic, hands-on learning.

I am incredibly proud of the collaborative work that has gone into designing this program and look forward to seeing our students begin their journey of discovery when the new school year begins. It is an exciting step towards providing an education that connects academic excellence with real-world impact and prepares students to become thoughtful, globally minded changers of the world.
